The Ancient Stone Church of Sapa – An Architectural Masterpiece Amidst the Northwest Highlands
The Ancient Stone Church of Sapa (also known as Our Lady of the Rosary Church) is an iconic landmark of Sapa Town, located near the central square. Built in 1926 and completed in 1935 by French architects, the church embodies the classic Roman Gothic architectural style of Europe.
Covering an area of over 6,000 square meters, the church was constructed mainly from hand-carved stone bonded with lime, sand, and molasses. It faces east, symbolizing the light and grace of God, while the western end represents the birthplace of Jesus Christ.
Its architectural highlights include triangular red-tiled roofs, an ancient bell tower that remains intact over time, and an interior painted in white, adorned with semi-circular stained-glass windows — all contributing to a solemn yet elegant atmosphere.
Today, the Ancient Stone Church of Sapa serves not only as a religious center for local parishioners but also as a renowned tourist attraction, drawing countless visitors to admire its timeless beauty and experience the spiritual ambiance of Sapa’s misty highlands.
