Cao Bằng – The Majestic Beauty of Mountain Passes

Nestled in the northeastern borderlands, Cao Bằng emerges like a grand painting of mountains, clouds, and winding passes. Each curve and slope is not only a gateway to breathtaking natural scenery but also a story of cultural heritage and history, opening up an emotional journey for travelers.

Mã Phục Pass – A Masterpiece Amidst the Mountains
Located on National Highway 3, about 22 km from Cao Bằng city center, Mã Phục Pass stretches nearly 3.5 km with seven winding slopes through towering limestone mountains. At its peak, two steep cliffs resembling a kneeling horse give the pass its unique name. From above, the road looks like a soft silk ribbon stretched across the vast green forested landscape.

Khau Cốc Chà Pass – A Road of Challenges
Situated on National Highway 4A, connecting Tuyên Quang and Cao Bằng, Khau Cốc Chà Pass is renowned for its steep incline and 14 sharp hairpin turns forming 15 consecutive slopes. In winter, dense fog makes this one of Cao Bằng’s most challenging routes. Yet at its summit, travelers are rewarded with sweeping views of valleys below. The journey also offers cultural encounters—passing through Đồng Mu Valley, home of the famous Xuân Trường sticky rice, and experiencing stilt houses, traditional dishes such as five-colored sticky rice, roasted pork, Cao Bằng duck noodles, and warm conversations with friendly locals. The best time to visit is during harvest season, from late September to November, when golden terraced fields blend with morning clouds to create an enchanting scene.

Nà Tềnh Pass – A Silk Ribbon in Nature
Around 15–18 km from Khau Cốc Chà, Nà Tềnh Pass enchants with its gentle slopes and serene beauty. The road winds along the mountainside, embracing terraced fields and tranquil villages. Each season brings its own charm: peach and plum blossoms in spring, golden rice fields in autumn, and misty skies in winter.

A Journey of Conquest – An Unforgettable Experience
Conquering Cao Bằng’s mountain passes is not only a test of skill for drivers but also an opportunity to immerse oneself in the pristine highland nature. For adventure enthusiasts, these routes are ideal destinations to capture breathtaking photos and preserve unforgettable memories of Vietnam’s majestic landscapes.
