Groundbreaking Ceremony for the Son La Hydropower Reservoir Floating Solar Power Project in Son La Province
The Son La Hydropower Reservoir Floating Solar Power Project is located in Muong La and Chieng Lao Communes, Son La Province, and is developed by BP Son La Energy Joint Stock Company as the Project Investor, with a total investment of approximately VND 17 trillion (equivalent to around USD 650 million).
The project is being developed over approximately 1,139.5 hectares of water surface area and 60.5 hectares of land area, with an installed capacity of 800 MW. Key components include a floating solar power system, a 500 kV substation, and approximately 10 km of 500 kV transmission lines connecting to the national power grid. Upon completion, the project is expected to generate approximately 1,250 GWh of clean electricity annually, contributing to the efficient utilization of the reservoir surface, supporting the green energy transition, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
The project was officially groundbreaking on May 18, 2026, with construction scheduled to commence in Q1 2027. The development will be implemented in four phases, each with a capacity of 200 MW, and is expected to be fully completed by Q4 2029.
