Pu Mat National Park – An Ideal Nature Destination in Nghe An

Pu Mat National Park (Nghe An) was officially recognized as an ASEAN Heritage Park at the 18th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on the Environment (AMME-18) in September 2025.

Located across the districts of Tuong Duong, Con Cuong, and Anh Son, the park covers a core area of 94,804 hectares and a buffer zone of 86,000 hectares. The name “Pu Mat” comes from the Thai language, meaning “mountain peak,” and is also the name of the highest mountain in the area (1,841 meters).

Pu Mat is one of Vietnam’s most biodiverse ecosystems, home to 2,494 plant species and 1,746 animal species, including many rare and endangered species listed in Vietnam’s Red Data Book. Remarkably, it is also the first place in Vietnam where the saola — one of the world’s rarest mammals — was discovered.

Notable attractions within the park include Khe Kem Waterfall, Khe Nuoc Moc, the 100-hectare ancient Sang Le forest, and Yen Thanh brocade weaving village.

With its wild, majestic, and poetic natural beauty, Pu Mat National Park stands out as one of the top eco-tourism destinations in Nghe An Province.
