Green Tourism – The Development Direction of Lào Cai
Lào Cai has set its sights on becoming a leading green and smart tourism destination in Vietnam and the region. Nature is regarded as its “invaluable asset” for growth, with many community-based tourism villages focusing on environmental protection, reducing plastic waste, using natural materials in homestay construction, planting trees, and encouraging visitors to engage in “green tourism” activities.
Several projects and destinations have strengthened the province’s tourism appeal. Bản Liền is increasingly recognized for its community-driven initiatives tied to landscape conservation; Sun World Fansipan Legend has upgraded its landscapes to welcome visitors; while Hoàng Liên National Park – which attracts thousands of visitors annually – reported a 150% year-on-year increase in ticket revenues over the first eight months of 2025, along with the launch of new hiking routes and adventure tours.
Currently, Lào Cai is home to 37 tourist sites, including many “green” destinations such as Thác Bà Lake, Suối Giàng, Bản Liền, Nghĩa Đô, Tả Van, and Tả Phìn. In its development strategy, the province emphasizes four key pillars: protecting the environment and landscapes; preserving and promoting cultural values; creating sustainable livelihoods and improving local incomes; and building an image of tourism that is safe, attractive, and distinctive.
With clear strategic direction and many positive outcomes, Lào Cai is steadily affirming its position as a green and smart destination for nature and adventure tourism, while also expanding its potential for sustainable development in the future.
